What Is Narayan Nagbali Puja and Why It Can Only Be Performed at Trimbakeshwar
Narayan Nagbali is actually two distinct rituals performed together over three days. Narayan Bali Puja is performed to bring peace to the souls of family members who suffered an unnatural death by accident, suicide, snakebite, or illness or whose annual shraddha rites were missed for years, causing Pitru Dosh in the family's horoscope. Nagbali Puja is performed separately to remove the sin (paap) of having killed a snake, intentionally or unintentionally, in this life or a past one.
he Garuda Purana describes both rituals in detail, and according to this scripture, Trimbakeshwar holds a unique distinction: it is the only place in India where the complete combined Narayan Nagbali ritual — both Bali and Nagbali together — can be performed. The ritual takes place at the sacred Ahilya Godavari Sangam and Sati Maha-Smashan, near the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, under the guidance of Tamrapatra-registered purohits whose families have performed this exact ritual for generations.
Narayan Bali vs Nagbali — Understanding the Two Rituals
Narayan Bali Puja
Performed when a family member has died an unnatural or untimely death (apamrityu) through accident, suicide, illness, or any sudden cause or when ancestral shraddha rites have lapsed, leading to Pitru Dosh in the horoscope.
Nagbali Puja
Performed to remove the sin of harming or killing a snake, especially a cobra, which holds particular religious significance in Hindu tradition. A ritual cremation is performed for a symbolic snake body made of wheat flour as part of this puja.
Because neither ritual alone fully resolves these combined doshas, they are traditionally performed together as a single three-day ceremony which is why the puja is named Narayan Nagbali, not just Narayan Bali.
