Book Kaal Sarp Puja Now →What Is Narayan Nagbali Puja and Why Can It Only Be Performed at Trimbakeshwar?
Narayan Nagbali Puja is not a single ritual — it is a combination of two separate but deeply connected Vedic ceremonies performed together over three consecutive days: Narayan Bali Puja is performed to grant moksha (liberation) to the souls of ancestors who died an unnatural or untimely death — such as by accident, suicide, murder, drowning, snakebite, or fire — and who have therefore been unable to complete their journey to the next world. According to Hindu scripture, such souls remain trapped between worlds, restless and unsatisfied, and this restlessness directly affects the living members of the family in the form of illness, financial problems, and repeated bad luck. Narayan Bali Puja frees these souls and allows them to attain peace and liberation.
Nag Bali Puja is performed to atone for the sin of knowingly or unknowingly killing a serpent — especially a Cobra (Nag), which is considered sacred in Hindu tradition. This sin, known as Sarpa Dosha or Nag Dosh, passes across generations and causes suffering for the entire family. Nag Bali Puja performs the last rites for a symbolic serpent body made of wheat flour, effectively removing this karmic debt from the family lineage.
Why only at Trimbakeshwar? Ancient Hindu scriptures — the Dharma Sindhu, Skandha Purana, and Padma Purana — all specifically state that Narayan Nagbali Puja must be performed at Trimbakeshwar and nowhere else. Three reasons make this place uniquely qualified: First, Trimbakeshwar is the only Jyotirlinga where Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh are worshipped as one — giving the ritual access to the combined energy of the Trimurti, which is essential for ancestral liberation ceremonies. Second, the ritual is performed at the Ahilya-Godavari Sangam, the confluence of the Godavari and Ahilya rivers beside the Sati Maha-Smashan — a sacred ground that ancient scriptures specifically designate as the correct location for these rites. Pandits performing this puja at any other location — a temple, ashram, or hall — are not following the original scriptural prescription.

Benefits of Narayan Nagbali Puja in Trimbakeshwar
Ancestral Peace and Liberation
The souls of ancestors who died unnatural deaths are ritually guided toward moksha. Once liberated, they stop creating karmic disturbances for the living family. This is the single most important benefit of the puja — and the one no other ritual can fully replace.
Relief from Pitru Dosh
Pitru Dosh formed due to ancestral karma is significantly weakened after Narayan Bali Puja. Families report measurable improvement in circumstances within weeks to months of completing the ritual.
Removal of Sarp Dosha and Nag Dosh
The Nag Bali portion of the puja cleanses the family of the karmic sin of harming or killing a sacred serpent. This removes Sarp Dosha from the horoscope and brings relief from the obstacles it causes — particularly around marriage and childbirth.

About Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
Trimbakeshwar Temple stands at the base of the Brahmagiri hills, near the source of the Godavari river, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The current temple structure was built in the mid-18th century by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb). Unlike every other Jyotirlinga, the lingam here represents the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh — together in one form, which is the foundational reason this site holds special significance for dosh-nivaran and ancestral rituals.
